This page tries to list some of the software that is either recommended for use with Big Sister or just is a nice piece of software we often use.
Paging / Short Messaging
Sendpage is nice if you need to
setup your own paging/sms gateway.
eCall in contrast to this
is a commercial paging/sms gateway that might be helpful if you do not want
to hassle with running your own.
RRDTool
The Round Robin Database Tool
is strongly recommended. Installing it on your Big Sister server
will enable graphing of performance data. Tobi Oetiker's RRDTool
is also worth a look if you are searching for more elaborate
performance data visualization than Big Sister implements.
System Monitoring
Nagios is a nice system, services and
network monitoring product. The Big Brother of
Big Sister is worth a look if you do not mind paying for software. If you do
like command lines then Mon
might be an interesting tool for you. Nice graphing is done by tools like
Cacti, Munin, the popular
MRTG,
many tools around RRDTool, etc.
SNMP
When monitoring via SNMP Big Sister uses Simon Leinen's
SNMP Perl module.
However, if you are installing a recent Big Sister version the SNMP module
is already included with Big Sister.
Wonder what information your devices provide via SNMP? SNMPLink or MIBDepot might have the MIBs for your device!
Web Utilities
We recommend installing SpeedyCGI
which improves performance of Perl CGI programs.
This web site has been built and is maintained by making heavy use of the Website Meta Language.
Packaging
MakeMSI is a
powerfull tool for creating Windows MSI (Microsoft Installer) packages.
